Then the LORD answered Job: 1The LORD continued his response to Job by saying:
"Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let the person who accuses God give him an answer!" 2"Should the one who is fighting the Almighty find fault with him? Let God's accuser answer."
Then Job answered the LORD: 3Then Job replied to the LORD. He said:
"Indeed, I am completely unworthy--how could I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth to silence myself. 4"I must look insignificant to you! How can I answer you? I'm speechless.
I have spoken once, but I cannot answer; twice, but I will say no more." 5I spoke once, but I can't answer; I tried a second time, but I won't do so anymore."
Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: 6The LORD answered Job from the wind storm and told him:
"Get ready for a difficult task like a man. I will question you and you will inform me! 7"Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers!
Would you indeed annul my justice? Would you declare me guilty so that you might be right? 8Indeed would you annul my justice and condemn me, just so you can claim that you're righteous?
Do you have an arm as powerful as God's, and can you thunder with a voice like his? 9Do you have strength like God? Can you create thunder with a sound like he can?"
Adorn yourself, then, with majesty and excellency, and clothe yourself with glory and honor! 10"When you have adorned yourself with exalted majesty, clothed yourself with splendor and dignity,
Scatter abroad the abundance of your anger. Look at every proud man and bring him low; 11dispensed the fury of your anger, made sure that you have humbled every proud person,
Look at every proud man and abase him; crush the wicked on the spot! 12stared down and subdued every proud person, trampled the wicked right where they are,
Hide them in the dust together, imprison them in the grave. 13buried them in the dust together, and sent them bound to that secret place,
Then I myself will acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. 14then I will applaud you myself! I'll admit that you can deliver yourself by your own efforts!"
"Look now at Behemoth, which I made as I made you; it eats grass like the ox. 15"Please observe Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like an ox.
Look at its strength in its loins, and its power in the muscles of its belly. 16Now take a look at the strength that he has in his loins, and in the muscles of his abdomen.
It makes its tail stiff like a cedar, the sinews of its thighs are tightly wound. 17His tail protrudes stiffly, like cedar; the sinews of his thigh interlink for strength.
Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like bars of iron. 18His bones are conduits of bronze; his strong bones are like bars of iron.
It ranks first among the works of God, the One who made it has furnished it with a sword. 19He is the grandest of God's undertakings, yet his creator is approaching him with his sword.
For the hills bring it food, where all the wild animals play. 20Mountains produce food for him, where all the wild animals frolic.
Under the lotus trees it lies, in the secrecy of the reeds and the marsh. 21He lies under the lotus trees, hiding under reeds and marshes.
The lotus trees conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream conceal it. 22The lotus trees cover him with their shade, and willows that line the wadis surround him.
If the river rages, it is not disturbed, it is secure, though the Jordan should surge up to its mouth. 23What you see as a raging river doesn't alarm him; he is confident when the Jordan overflows.
Can anyone catch it by its eyes, or pierce its nose with a snare? 24Are your eyes looking to capture him, or to pierce his snout with a bridle?"
