And Job took up his discourse again: | 1Then Job continued his discourse and said, |
"As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter-- | 2"As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul, |
for while my spirit is still in me, and the breath from God is in my nostrils, | 3For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils, |
my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will whisper no deceit. | 4My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit. |
I will never declare that you three are in the right; until I die, I will not set aside my integrity! | 5"Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. |
I will maintain my righteousness and never let it go; my conscience will not reproach me for as long as I live. | 6"I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days. |
"May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unrighteous. | 7"May my enemy be as the wicked And my opponent as the unjust. |
For what hope does the godless have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? | 8"For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, When God requires his life? |
Does God listen to his cry when distress overtakes him? | 9"Will God hear his cry When distress comes upon him? |
Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call out to God at all times? | 10"Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? |
I will teach you about the power of God; What is on the Almighty's mind I will not conceal. | 11"I will instruct you in the power of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. |
If you yourselves have all seen this, Why in the world do you continue this meaningless talk? | 12"Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then do you act foolishly? |
This is the portion of the wicked man allotted by God, the inheritance that evildoers receive from the Almighty. | 13"This is the portion of a wicked man from God, And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty. |
If his children increase--it is for the sword! His offspring never have enough to eat. | 14"Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread. |
Those who survive him are buried by the plague, and their widows do not mourn for them. | 15"His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not be able to weep. |
If he piles up silver like dust and stores up clothing like mounds of clay, | 16"Though he piles up silver like dust And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay, |
what he stores up a righteous man will wear, and an innocent man will inherit his silver. | 17He may prepare it, but the just will wear it And the innocent will divide the silver. |
The house he builds is as fragile as a moth's cocoon, like a hut that a watchman has made. | 18"He has built his house like the spider's web, Or as a hut which the watchman has made. |
He goes to bed wealthy, but will do so no more. When he opens his eyes, it is all gone. | 19"He lies down rich, but never again; He opens his eyes, and it is no longer. |
Terrors overwhelm him like a flood; at night a whirlwind carries him off. | 20"Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night. |
The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. | 21"The east wind carries him away, and he is gone, For it whirls him away from his place. |
It hurls itself against him without pity as he flees headlong from its power. | 22"For it will hurl at him without sparing; He will surely try to flee from its power. |
It claps its hands at him in derision and hisses him away from his place. | 23"Men will clap their hands at him And will hiss him from his place. |
