And Job took up his discourse again: | 1Job continued with his discussion and said: |
"As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter-- | 2"The living God has withheld justice from me; the Almighty has made my life bitter. |
for while my spirit is still in me, and the breath from God is in my nostrils, | 3As long as I can breathe; as long as God's breath is in my nostrils, |
my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will whisper no deceit. | 4I won't speak lies nor will I utter deceit. |
I will never declare that you three are in the right; until I die, I will not set aside my integrity! | 5Far be it from me to admit that you're right! I intend to maintain my integrity even if it kills me! |
I will maintain my righteousness and never let it go; my conscience will not reproach me for as long as I live. | 6I'll retain my righteousness and not compromise it; my conscience won't rebuke me at any time. |
"May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unrighteous. | 7"May my enemy be like the wicked; my adversary like the unjust. |
For what hope does the godless have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? | 8For where is the hope of the godless when he is eliminated; when God takes away his life? |
Does God listen to his cry when distress overtakes him? | 9Will God hear his cry when distress overtakes him? |
Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call out to God at all times? | 10Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times?" |
I will teach you about the power of God; What is on the Almighty's mind I will not conceal. | 11"I'll teach you about the power of God, that which is with the Almighty I won't conceal. |
If you yourselves have all seen this, Why in the world do you continue this meaningless talk? | 12Look! All of you have been watching, so why have you become so completely worthless? |
This is the portion of the wicked man allotted by God, the inheritance that evildoers receive from the Almighty. | 13"This is what a wicked person inherits from God, and what the ruthless will receive from the Almighty: |
If his children increase--it is for the sword! His offspring never have enough to eat. | 14If he has many children, their destiny is to die by the sword, and his descendants won't have enough food. |
Those who survive him are buried by the plague, and their widows do not mourn for them. | 15Those who do survive him disease will bury, and his widow won't even weep. |
If he piles up silver like dust and stores up clothing like mounds of clay, | 16"Though he hoards silver like dust, and stores away garments like clay, |
what he stores up a righteous man will wear, and an innocent man will inherit his silver. | 17whatever he stores up, the righteous will wear, and the innocent will inherit that silver! |
The house he builds is as fragile as a moth's cocoon, like a hut that a watchman has made. | 18"He has built his house like a moth's cocoon, like a temporary sunshade that a watchman makes. |
He goes to bed wealthy, but will do so no more. When he opens his eyes, it is all gone. | 19He will go to bed wealthy, but won't be doing that anymore! When he opens his eyes, it will be gone! |
Terrors overwhelm him like a flood; at night a whirlwind carries him off. | 20Terror will overtake him like a flood, at night, a tornado will sweep him away. |
The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. | 21He'll be swept up by a storm wind and carried away; he'll be whirled away from his place. |
It hurls itself against him without pity as he flees headlong from its power. | 22It will toss him around without pity. He'll try to break free from its grip, |
It claps its hands at him in derision and hisses him away from his place. | 23but it will clap its hands over him, hissing at him as it lunges toward him." |
