2"Speak to the whole congregation of the Israelites and tell them, 'You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. | 2"Tell the entire assembly of Israel that they are to be holy, since I, the LORD your God, am holy. |
3Each of you must respect his mother and his father, and you must keep my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God. | 3"Each of you is to fear his mother and father. "Observe my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God. |
4Do not turn to idols, and you must not make for yourselves gods of cast metal. I am the LORD your God. | 4"You are not to turn to their idols or cast gods out of melted metal for yourselves. I am the LORD your God. |
5"'When you sacrifice a peace offering sacrifice to the LORD, you must sacrifice it so that it is accepted for you. | 5"When you offer a peace offering to the LORD, you are to offer it for your acceptance. |
6It must be eaten on the day of your sacrifice and on the following day, but what is left over until the third day must be burned up. | 6Your sacrifice is to be eaten on that day and the next day. Anything that remains to the third day is to be incinerated. |
7If, however, it is eaten on the third day, it is spoiled, it will not be accepted, | 7If it is eaten on the third day, it's unclean. It won't be accepted. |
8and the one who eats it will bear his punishment for iniquity because he has profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person will be cut off from his people. | 8Anyone who eats it will bear the punishment of his sin, since he will have defiled himself regarding the LORD's holy things. That person is to be eliminated from contact with his people." |
9"'When you gather in the harvest of your land, you must not completely harvest the corner of your field, and you must not gather up the gleanings of your harvest. | 9"When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to completely finish harvesting the corners of the field—that is, you are not to pick what remains after you have reaped your harvest. |
10You must not pick your vineyard bare, and you must not gather up the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You must leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the LORD your God. | 10You are not to gather your vineyard or pick up the fallen grapes of your vineyard. Leave something for the poor and the resident alien who lives among you. I am the LORD your God." |
11"'You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen. | 11"You are not to steal or lie or deal falsely with your neighbor. |
12You must not swear falsely in my name, so that you do not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD. | 12"You are not to use my name to deceive, thereby defiling the name of your God. I am the LORD. |

15"'You must not deal unjustly in judgment: you must neither show partiality to the poor nor honor the rich. You must judge your fellow citizen fairly. | 15"You are not to be unjust in deciding a case. You are not to show partiality to the poor or honor the great. Instead, decide the case of your neighbor with righteousness." |
16You must not go about as a slanderer among your people. You must not stand idly by when your neighbor's life is at stake. I am the LORD. | 16"You are not to go around slandering your people. "You are not to stand idle when your neighbor's life is at stake. I am the LORD. |
17You must not hate your brother in your heart. You must surely reprove your fellow citizen so that you do not incur sin on account of him. | 17"You are not to hate your relative in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor if you must, but you are not to incur guilt on account of him. |
18You must not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people, but you must love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. | 18"You are not to seek vengeance or hold a grudge against the descendants of your people. Instead, love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD." |
19You must keep my statutes. You must not allow two different kinds of your animals to breed, you must not sow your field with two different kinds of seed, and you must not wear a garment made of two different kinds of fabric. | 19"Observe my statutes. "You are not to let your cattle breed with a different species. "You are not to sow your fields with two different kinds of seeds. "You are not to wear clothing made from two different kinds of material. |
20"'When a man has sexual intercourse with a woman, although she is a slave woman designated for another man and she has not yet been ransomed, or freedom has not been granted to her, there will be an obligation to pay compensation. They must not be put to death, because she was not free. | 20"When a person has sexual relations with a woman servant who is engaged to another man, but she has not been completely redeemed nor has her freedom been granted to her, there is to be an inquiry, but they won't be put to death, since she has not been freed. |
21He must bring his guilt offering to the LORD at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, a guilt offering ram, | 21The perpetrator is to bring his guilt offering to the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting—that is, a ram as a guilt offering. |
22and the priest is to make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering before the LORD for his sin that he has committed, and he will be forgiven of his sin that he has committed. | 22Then the priest is to make atonement for him with the ram as a guilt offering in the LORD's presence on account of his sin which he has committed, but which will be forgiven him." |
23"'When you enter the land and plant any fruit tree, you must consider its fruit to be forbidden. Three years it will be forbidden to you; it must not be eaten. | 23"When you have entered the land and planted all sorts of trees for food, regard its fruit as uncircumcised for the first three years for you. It is not to be eaten. |
24In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, praise offerings to the LORD. | 24During the fourth year, all its fruit is to be offered as a holy token of praise to the LORD. |
25Then in the fifth year you may eat its fruit to add its produce to your harvest. I am the LORD your God. | 25But on the fifth year, you may eat its fruits to increase its produce for you." |
26"'You must not eat anything with the blood still in it. You must not practice either divination or soothsaying. | 26"You are not to eat anything containing blood, engage in occult practices, or practice fortune telling. |
27You must not round off the corners of the hair on your head or ruin the corners of your beard. | 27"You are not to cut your hair in ritualistic patterns on your head or deface the edges of your beard. |
28You must not slash your body for a dead person or incise a tattoo on yourself. I am the LORD. | 28"You are not to make incisions in your flesh on account of the dead nor submit to cuts or tattoos. I am the LORD. |
29Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, so that the land does not practice prostitution and become full of lewdness. | 29"You are not to defile your daughter by engaging her in prostitution so the land won't become filled with wickedness. |
30"'You must keep my Sabbaths and fear my sanctuary. I am the LORD. | 30"Observe my Sabbath and stand in awe of my sanctuary. I am the LORD. |
31Do not turn to the spirits of the dead and do not seek familiar spirits to become unclean by them. I am the LORD your God. | 31"You are to consult neither mediums nor familiar spirits. You are never to seek them—you'll just be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. |
32You must stand up in the presence of the aged, honor the presence of an elder, and fear your God. I am the LORD. | 32"Rise in the presence of the aged and honor the elderly face-to-face. "Fear your God. I am the LORD. |
33When a foreigner resides with you in your land, you must not oppress him. | 33"If a resident alien lives with you in your land, you are not to mistreat him. |
34The foreigner who resides with you must be to you like a native citizen among you; so you must love him as yourself, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. | 34You are to treat the resident alien the same way you treat the native born among you—love him like yourself, since you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. |
35You must not do injustice in the regulation of measures, whether of length, weight, or volume. | 35"You are not to act unjustly in deciding a case or when measuring weight and quantity. |
36You must have honest balances, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. | 36You are to maintain just balances and reliable standards for weights, dry volumes, and liquid volumes. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. |
37You must be sure to obey all my statutes and regulations. I am the LORD.'" | 37Observe all my statutes and all my ordinances in order to practice them. I am the LORD." |
