First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanks be offered on behalf of all people, | 1First of all, then, I urge you to offer to God petitions, prayers, intercessions, and expressions of thanks for all people, |
even for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. | 2for kings, and for everyone who has authority, so that we might lead a quiet and peaceful life with all godliness and dignity. |
Such prayer for all is good and welcomed before God our Savior, | 3This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, |
since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. | 4who wants all people to be saved and to come to know the truth fully. |
For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human, | 5There is one God. There is also one mediator between God and human beings—a human, the Messiah Jesus. |
who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God's purpose at his appointed time. | 6He gave himself as a ransom for everyone, the testimony at the proper time. |
For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle--I am telling the truth; I am not lying--and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. | 7For this reason I was appointed to be an announcer, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the gentiles. (I am telling you the truth. I am not lying.) |
So I want the men to pray in every place, lifting up holy hands without anger or dispute. | 8Therefore, I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without being angry or argumentative. |
Likewise the women are to dress in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control. Their adornment must not be with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothing, | 9Women, for their part, should display their beauty by dressing modestly and decently in appropriate clothes, not with elaborate hairstyles or by wearing gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, |
but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. | 10but through good actions. This is proper for women who claim to revere God. |
A woman must learn quietly with all submissiveness. | 11Let a woman learn with a quiet spirit, and submissively. |
But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man. She must remain quiet. | 12Moreover, in the area of teaching, I am not allowing a woman to instigate conflict toward a man. Instead, she is to remain calm. |
For Adam was formed first and then Eve. | 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve, |
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, because she was fully deceived, fell into transgression. | 14and it was not Adam who was deceived. It was the woman who was deceived and became disobedient, |
But she will be delivered through childbearing, if she continues in faith and love and holiness with self-control. | 15even though she will be saved through the birth of the Child, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, along with good judgment. |
