| 4"You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below. | 4Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. |
| 5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me, | 5You must not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the fathers' sin, to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, |
| 6and showing covenant faithfulness to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. | 6but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commands. |

| 23You must not make gods of silver alongside me, nor make gods of gold for yourselves. | 23You must not make gods of silver to rival Me; you must not make gods of gold for yourselves." |
| 24You must make for me an altar made of earth, and you will sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I cause my name to be honored I will come to you and I will bless you. | 24You must make an earthen altar for Me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats, as well as your cattle. | 25If you make me an altar of stone, you must not build it of stones shaped with tools, for if you use your tool on it you have defiled it. | 25If you make a stone altar for Me, you must not build it out of cut stones. If you use your chisel on it, you will defile it. |
