But as for you, communicate the behavior that goes with sound teaching. | 1But you are to proclaim things consistent with sound teaching. |
Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. | 2Older men are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. |
Older women likewise are to exhibit behavior fitting for those who are holy, not slandering, not slaves to excessive drinking, but teaching what is good. | 3In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking. They are to teach what is good, |
In this way they will train the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, |
to be self-controlled, pure, fulfilling their duties at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the message of God may not be discredited. | 5to be self-controlled, pure, workers at home, kind, and in submission to their husbands, so that God's word will not be slandered. |
Encourage younger men likewise to be self-controlled, | 6In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled |
showing yourself to be an example of good works in every way. In your teaching show integrity, dignity, | 7in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching. |
and a sound message that cannot be criticized, so that any opponent will be at a loss, because he has nothing evil to say about us. | 8Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that any opponent will be ashamed, because he doesn't have anything bad to say about us. |
Slaves are to be subject to their own masters in everything, to do what is wanted and not talk back, | 9Slaves are to submit to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back |
not pilfering, but showing all good faith, in order to bring credit to the teaching of God our Savior in everything. | 10or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in everything. |
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. | 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, |
It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, | 12instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, |
as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. | 13while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. |
He gave himself for us to set us free from every kind of lawlessness and to purify for himself a people who are truly his, who are eager to do good. | 14He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works. |
So communicate these things with the sort of exhortation or rebuke that carries full authority. Don't let anyone look down on you. | 15Proclaim these things; encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. |
