The prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah while he was writing down in a scroll the words that Jeremiah spoke to him. This happened in the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was ruling over Judah. | 1This is the word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah when he wrote these words on a scroll at Jeremiah's dictation in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah: |
"The LORD God of Israel has a message for you, Baruch. | 2"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: |
You have said, "I feel so hopeless! For the LORD has added sorrow to my suffering. I am worn out from groaning. I can't find any rest."'" | 3'You have said, "Woe is me, because the LORD has added misery to my pain! I am worn out with groaning and have found no rest."' |
The LORD told Jeremiah, "Tell Baruch, 'The LORD says, "I am about to tear down what I have built and to uproot what I have planted. I will do this throughout the whole earth. | 4"This is what you are to say to him: 'This is what the LORD says: "What I have built I am about to demolish, and what I have planted I am about to uproot--the whole land! |
Are you looking for great things for yourself? Do not look for such things. For I, the LORD, affirm that I am about to bring disaster on all humanity. But I will allow you to escape with your life wherever you go."'" | 5But as for you, do you pursue great things for yourself? Stop pursuing! For I am about to bring disaster on everyone"--this is the LORD's declaration--"but I will grant you your life like the spoils of war wherever you go."'" |
