The Birth of Jesus the Messiah |
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. | 18This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. |
And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. | 19Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. |
But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. | 20As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. |
"She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." | 21And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” |
Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: | 22All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: |
"BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." | 23“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” |
And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. |
but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. | 25But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. |
