New American Standard Bible 1995 | English Standard Version |
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, | 1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, |
for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. | 2for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. |
This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, | 3This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, |
who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. | 4who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. |
For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, | 5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, |
who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. | 6who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. |
For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. | 7For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. |
Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension. | 8I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; |
Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, | 9likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, |
but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. | 10but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. |
A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. | 11Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. |
But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. | 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. |
For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. | 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve; |
And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. | 14and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. |
But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint. | 15Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. |
