King James Bible | New International Version |
Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them? | 1After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?" |
And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. | 2The LORD answered, "Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands." |
And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him. | 3The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, "Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours." So the Simeonites went with them. |
And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men. | 4When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. |
And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites. | 5It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. |
But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. | 6Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes. |
And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. | 7Then Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. |
Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. | 8The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire. |
And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley. | 9After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills. |
And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. | 10They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. |
And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher: | 11From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). |
And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. | 12And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher." |
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. | 13Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage. |
And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou? | 14One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?" |
And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs. | 15She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. |
And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people. | 16The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad. |
And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah. | 17Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah. |
Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof. | 18Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron--each city with its territory. |
And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. | 19The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron. |
And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. | 20As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak. |
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day. | 21The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites. |
And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them. | 22Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them. |
And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.) | 23When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz), |
And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy. | 24the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well." |
And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family. | 25So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family. |
And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day. | 26He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day. |
Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. | 27But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land. |
And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out. | 28When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely. |
Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. | 29Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them. |
Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries. | 30Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. |
Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob: | 31Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob. |
But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out. | 32The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. |
Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them. | 33Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. |
And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley: | 34The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain. |
But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries. | 35And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. |
And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward. | 36The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond. |
