Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, | 1Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish |
And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. | 2and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. |
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. | 3You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. |
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. | 4I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! |
The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. | 5Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. |
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. | 6I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. |
When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. | 7When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. |
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. | 8Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. |
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. | 9But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" |
And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. | 10Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. |
