King James Bible | International Standard Version |
Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, | 1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the sea creature. |
And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. | 2He said: "I called out to the LORD from the midst of affliction directed at me, and he answered me. From the depths of death I cried out for help; and you heard my cry. |
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. | 3You cast me into the deep— into the heart of the sea. Flood waters engulfed me. All your breakers and your waves swirled over me. |
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. | 4So I told myself, 'I have been driven away from you. How will I again gaze on your holy Temple?' |
The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. | 5Flood waters encompassed me, the deep surrounded me while seaweed wrapped around my head. |
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. | 6I sank to the roots of the mountains; the earth's prison bars closed around me forever. Yet you resurrect the dead from the Pit, LORD my God! |
When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. | 7"As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to you in your holy Temple. |
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. | 8Those who cling to vain idols leave behind the gracious love that could have been theirs. |
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. | 9But as for me, with a voice of thanksgiving I will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance is the LORD's!" |
And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. | 10Then the LORD spoke to the sea creature, and it spewed Jonah onto the dry land. |
