Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. | 1Some time later, divine beings again presented themselves to the LORD, and Satan accompanied them to present himself to the LORD. |
And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. | 2The LORD asked Satan, "Where have you come from?" In response, Satan told the LORD, "From wandering all over the earth and walking back and forth throughout it." |
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. | 3The LORD asked Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth. The man is blameless as well as upright. He fears God and keeps away from evil. He remains firm in his integrity, even though you have been urging me to overwhelm him without cause." |
And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. | 4Satan answered the LORD, "Skin for skin! The man will give up everything that he owns in exchange for his health. |
But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. | 5However, stretch out your hand and strike his bones and flesh, and he'll curse you to your face, won't he?" |
And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. | 6Then the LORD told Satan, "Very well then, he is under your control. Just preserve his life." |
So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. | 7So Satan left the LORD's presence and struck Job with terrible boils from the sole of his feet to the top of his head. |
And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes. | 8Job took a broken piece of pottery to scrape himself while sitting among the ashes. |
Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die. | 9Then his wife told him, "Do you remain firm in your integrity? Curse God and die!" |
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips. | 10But he replied to her, "You're talking like foolish women do. Are we to accept what is good from God but not tragedy?" Throughout all of this, Job did not sin by what he said. |
Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. | 11When Job's three friends heard all these tragedies that happened to him, they each traveled from their home towns to visit him. Eliphaz came from Teman, Bildad came from Shuah, and Zophar came from Naamath. They met together and went to console and comfort him. |
And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. | 12Observing him from a distance, at first they didn't even recognize him, so they raised their voices and burst into tears. They each ripped their robes, threw ashes into the air on their heads, |
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great. | 13and sat with Job on the ground for a full week without saying a word, since they could see the great extent of his anguish.
