| 5And of the Shilonites; Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons. | 5From the descendants of Shilon there was Asaiah the firstborn, along with his descendants. |
| 6And of the sons of Zerah; Jeuel, and their brethren, six hundred and ninety. | 6From the descendants of Zerah there was Jeuel, along with 690 of their relatives. |
| 7And of the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hasenuah, | 7From the descendants of Benjamin there was Meshullam's son Sallu, who was also the grandson of Hodaviah and great-grandson of Hassenuah, |
| 8And Ibneiah the son of Jeroham, and Elah the son of Uzzi, the son of Michri, and Meshullam the son of Shephathiah, the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah; | 8Jeroham's son Ibneiah, Uzzi's son Elah, who was also Michri's grandson, and Shephatiah's son Meshullam, who was the grandson of Reuel and great-grandson of Ibnijah, |
| 9And their brethren, according to their generations, nine hundred and fifty and six. All these men were chief of the fathers in the house of their fathers. | 9along with 956 of their relatives according to their generations. All of these were leaders of families according to their ancestral households. |
| 10And of the priests; Jedaiah, and Jehoiarib, and Jachin, | 10From the priests there were Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin, |
| 11And Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the ruler of the house of God; | 11and Hilkiah's son Azariah, who was fathered by Meshullam, who was fathered by Zadok, who was fathered by Meraioth, who was fathered by Ahitub, the Chief Operating Officer of the Temple of God. |
| 12And Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pashur, the son of Malchijah, and Maasiai the son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer; | 12There was Jeroham's son Adaiah, who was fathered by Pashhur, who was fathered by Malchijah, and Adiel's son Maasai, who was fathered by Jahzerah, who was fathered by Meshullam, who was fathered by Meshillemith, who was fathered by Immer, |
| 13And their brethren, heads of the house of their fathers, a thousand and seven hundred and threescore; very able men for the work of the service of the house of God. | 13along with 1,760 of their relatives, who were leaders of their ancestral households, valiant and qualified to serve in the Temple of God. |
| 14And of the Levites; Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari; | 14From the descendants of Levi there was Hasshub's son Shemaiah, who was the grandson of Azrikam, who was fathered by Hashabiah, from the descendants of Merari; |
| 15And Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal, and Mattaniah the son of Micah, the son of Zichri, the son of Asaph; | 15along with Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mica's son Mattaniah, who was the grandson of Zichri and great-grandson of Asaph, |
| 16And Obadiah the son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah the son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, that dwelt in the villages of the Netophathites. | 16and Shemaiah's son Obadiah, who was the grandson of Galal, who was fathered by Jeduthun, and Asa's son Berechiah, who was the grandson of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites. |
| 17And the porters were, Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brethren: Shallum was the chief; | 17The gatekeepers included Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and other relatives. Shallum was the leader. |
| 18Who hitherto waited in the king's gate eastward: they were porters in the companies of the children of Levi. | 18He used to be stationed in the King's Gate on the east side as one of the gatekeepers of the camp belonging to the descendants of Levi. |
| 19And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the host of the LORD, were keepers of the entry. | 19Kore's son Shallum, who was the grandson of Ebiasaph and the great-grandson of Korah, and the descendants of Korah (who were relatives of his ancestral house) were over the service responsibilities and served as guardians of the entrances of the Tent, just as their ancestors had been in charge of the camp of the LORD and guardians of the entrance. |
| 20And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past, and the LORD was with him. | 20Eleazar's son Phinehas used to be Commander-in-Chief over them—the LORD was with him. |
| 21And Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was porter of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. | 21Meshelemiah's son Zechariah was gatekeeper at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. |
| 22All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office. | 22All these, who had been set apart as gatekeepers at the entrances, numbered 212 and had been enrolled by genealogies in their villages. David and Samuel the seer installed them in their positions of trust, |
| 23So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the LORD, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards. | 23so they and their descendants were in charge of the gates of the house of the LORD, that is, the House of the Tent, as guardians. |
| 24In four quarters were the porters, toward the east, west, north, and south. | 24The guardians were stationed on four sides—east, west, north, and south. |
| 25And their brethren, which were in their villages, were to come after seven days from time to time with them. | 25Their relatives who lived in their villages were required to visit every seven days to be with them in turn, |
| 26For these Levites, the four chief porters, were in their set office, and were over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God. | 26because the four senior gatekeepers (who were descendants of Levi) had been placed in charge of the chambers and the treasury of the Temple of God. |
| 27And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them. | 27They spent the night near the Temple of God, since they had been entrusted to guard it. They were in charge of opening it every morning. |
| 28And certain of them had the charge of the ministering vessels, that they should bring them in and out by tale. | 28Some were responsible for the service utensils, and they were required to take an inventory of them when they were brought in and out. |
| 29Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices. | 29Others were responsible for the furniture and for all of the holy utensils, including the flour, wine, oil, incense, and spices. |
| 30And some of the sons of the priests made the ointment of the spices. | 30Other descendants of the priests prepared the mixed spices. |
| 31And Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the set office over the things that were made in the pans. | 31Mattithiah, a descendant of Levi and firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was in charge of making the offering cakes. |
| 32And other of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites, were over the shewbread, to prepare it every sabbath. | 32Some of their Kohathite relatives were responsible to prepare the rows of bread for each Sabbath. |
| 33And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night. | 33These singers, leaders of ancestral households of the descendants of Levi, were living in the chambers of the Temple. Freed from other service responsibilities, they were on duty day and night. |
| 34These chief fathers of the Levites were chief throughout their generations; these dwelt at Jerusalem. | 34These leaders of the descendants of Levi, enrolled according to their genealogies, lived in Jerusalem. |
| 35And in Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon, Jehiel, whose wife's name was Maachah: | 35Jeiel, who fathered Gibeon, lived in the city of Gibeon. His wife was named Maacah. |
| 36And his firstborn son Abdon, then Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Ner, and Nadab, | 36His firstborn son was Abdon, followed by Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, |
| 37And Gedor, and Ahio, and Zechariah, and Mikloth. | 37Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth. |
| 38And Mikloth begat Shimeam. And they also dwelt with their brethren at Jerusalem, over against their brethren. | 38Mikloth fathered Shimeam. They lived across town from their relatives in Jerusalem. |
| 39And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal. | 39Ner fathered Kish, Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal. |
| 40And the son of Jonathan was Meribbaal: and Meribbaal begat Micah. | 40Jonathan fathered Merib-baal, and Merib-baal fathered Micah. |
| 41And the sons of Micah were, Pithon, and Melech, and Tahrea, and Ahaz. | 41Micah's descendants included Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz. |
| 42And Ahaz begat Jarah; and Jarah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza; | 42Ahaz fathered Jarah, and Jarah fathered Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri. Zimri fathered Moza, and |
| 43And Moza begat Binea; and Rephaiah his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son. | 43Moza fathered Binea, and Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son. |
| 44And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan: these were the sons of Azel. | 44Azel had six descendants with these names: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan—these were the descendants of Azel. |
