Sing joyfully to God, our strength. Raise a shout to the God of Jacob. | 1For the director of music. According to gittith. Of Asaph. Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob! |
Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant-sounding lyre along with the harp. | 2Begin the music, strike the timbrel, play the melodious harp and lyre. |
Blow the ram's horn when there is a New Moon, when there is a full moon, on our festival day, | 3Sound the ram's horn at the New Moon, and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival; |
because it is a statute in Israel, an ordinance by the God of Jacob, | 4this is a decree for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob. |
a decree that he prescribed for Joseph when he went throughout the land of Egypt, speaking a language I did not recognize. | 5When God went out against Egypt, he established it as a statute for Joseph. I heard an unknown voice say: |
I removed the burden from your shoulder; your hands were freed of the burdensome basket. | 6"I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket. |
In a time of need you called out and I delivered you; I answered you from the dark thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Interlude | 7In your distress you called and I rescued you, I answered you out of a thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. |
Listen, My people and I will warn you. Israel, if only you would obey me! | 8Hear me, my people, and I will warn you-- if you would only listen to me, Israel! |
You must neither have a foreign god over you or worship a strange god. | 9You shall have no foreign god among you; you shall not worship any god other than me. |
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, open your mouth that I may fill it. | 10I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. |
Yet my people didn't obey my voice; Israel didn't submit to me. | 11"But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. |
So I allowed them to continue in their stubbornness, living by their own advice. | 12So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. |
If only my people would obey me, if only Israel would walk in my ways! | 13"If my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways, |
Then I would quickly subdue their enemies. I would turn against their foes. | 14how quickly I would subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes! |
Those who hate the LORD will cringe before him; their punishment will be permanent. | 15Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him, and their punishment would last forever. |
But I will feed Israel with the finest wheat, satisfying you with honey from the rock. | 16But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you." |
