LORD, remember in David's favor all of his troubles; | 1A song of ascents. O LORD, for David's sake remember all his strenuous effort, |
how he swore an oath to the LORD, vowing to the Mighty One of Jacob, | 2and how he made a vow to the LORD, and swore an oath to the powerful ruler of Jacob. |
"I will not enter my house, or lie down on my bed, | 3He said, "I will not enter my own home, or get into my bed. |
or let myself go to sleep or even take a nap, | 4I will not allow my eyes to sleep, or my eyelids to slumber, |
until I locate a place for the LORD, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob." | 5until I find a place for the LORD, a fine dwelling place for the powerful ruler of Jacob." |
We heard about it in Ephrata; we found it in the fields of Jaar. | 6Look, we heard about it in Ephrathah, we found it in the territory of Jaar. |
Let's go to his dwelling place and worship at his footstool. | 7Let us go to his dwelling place! Let us worship before his footstool! |
Arise, LORD, and go to your resting place, you and the ark of your strength. | 8Ascend, O LORD, to your resting place, you and the ark of your strength! |
May your priests be clothed with righteousness and may your godly ones shout for joy. | 9May your priests be clothed with integrity! May your loyal followers shout for joy! |
For the sake of your servant David, don't turn away the face of your anointed one. | 10For the sake of David, your servant, do not reject your chosen king! |
The LORD made an oath to David from which he will not retreat: "One of your sons I will set in place on your throne. | 11The LORD made a reliable promise to David; he will not go back on his word. He said, "I will place one of your descendants on your throne. |
If your sons keep my covenant and my statutes that I will teach them, then their sons will also sit on your throne forever." | 12If your sons keep my covenant and the rules I teach them, their sons will also sit on your throne forever." |
For the LORD has chosen Zion, desiring it as his dwelling place. | 13Certainly the LORD has chosen Zion; he decided to make it his home. |
"This is my resting place forever. Here I will live, because I desire to do so. | 14He said, "This will be my resting place forever; I will live here, for I have chosen it. |
I will bless its provisions abundantly; I will satiate its poor with food. | 15I will abundantly supply what she needs; I will give her poor all the food they need. |
I will clothe its priests with salvation and its godly ones will shout for joy. | 16I will protect her priests, and her godly people will shout exuberantly. |
There I will create a power base for David— I have prepared a lamp for my anointed one. | 17There I will make David strong; I have determined that my chosen king's dynasty will continue. |
I will clothe his enemies with disgrace, but on him his crown will shine." | 18I will humiliate his enemies, and his crown will shine. |
