Later, the LORD told Moses, 1Then the LORD spoke to Moses saying,
"Send men to explore the land of Canaan that I'm about to give to the Israelis. Send one man to represent each of his ancestor's tribes, every one of them a distinguished leader among them."2"Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers' tribes, every one a leader among them."
So that's just what Moses did, sending them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the LORD's instructions. All of the men were Israeli leaders. 3So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the command of the LORD, all of them men who were heads of the sons of Israel.
These were their names: From Reuben's tribe, Zaccur's son Shammua; 4These then were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
From Simeon's tribe, Hori's son Shaphat; 5from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
From Judah's tribe, Jephunneh's son Caleb; 6from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
from Issachar's tribe, Joseph's son Igal; 7from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
From Ephraim's tribe, Nun's son Hoshea; 8from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun;
From Benjamin's tribe, Raphu's son Palti; 9from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
from Zebulun's tribe, Sodi's son Gaddiel; 10from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
from Joseph's tribe of Manasseh, Susi's son Gaddi; 11from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
From Dan's tribe, Gemalli's son Ammiel; 12from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
from Asher's tribe, Michael's son Sethur; 13from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
from Naphtali's tribe, Vophsi's son Nahbi; 14from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
and from Gad's tribe, Machi's son Geuel. 15from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
These are the names of the men sent by Moses to explore the land. Moses renamed Nun's son Hoshea to Joshua. 16These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land; but Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.
Then he sent them out to explore the land of Canaan. He instructed them, "Go up from here through the Negev, then ascend to the hill country. 17When Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, he said to them, "Go up there into the Negev; then go up into the hill country.
See what the land is like. Observe whether the people who live there are strong or weak, or whether they're few or numerous. 18"See what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many.
Look to see whether the land where they live is good or bad, and whether the cities in which they live are merely tents or if they're fortified. 19"How is the land in which they live, is it good or bad? And how are the cities in which they live, are they like open camps or with fortifications?
Examine the farmland, whether it's fertile or barren, and see if there are fruit-bearing trees in it or not. Be very courageous, and bring back some samples of the fruit of the land." As it was, that time of year was the season for the first fruits of the grape harvest. 20"How is the land, is it fat or lean? Are there trees in it or not? Make an effort then to get some of the fruit of the land." Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.
So they went to explore the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob, and as far as the outskirts of Hamath. 21So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, at Lebo-hamath.
They went through the Negev and reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak lived. (Hebron had been constructed seven years before Zoan in Egypt had been built).22When they had gone up into the Negev, they came to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
Soon they arrived in the valley of Eshcol, where they cut a single branch of grapes and carried it on a pole between two men, along with some pomegranates and figs. 23Then they came to the valley of Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men, with some of the pomegranates and the figs.
The entire place was called the Eshcol Valley on account of the cluster of grapes that the men of Israel had taken from there.24That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there.
At the end of 40 days, they all returned from exploring the land, 25When they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days,
came in to Moses and Aaron, and delivered their report to the entire congregation of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They brought back their report to the entire congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. 26they proceeded to come to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.
"We arrived at the place where you've sent us," they reported, "and it certainly does flow with milk and honey. Furthermore, this is its fruit, 27Thus they told him, and said, "We went in to the land where you sent us; and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
except that the people who have settled in the land are strong, and their cities are greatly fortified. We also saw the descendants of Anak. 28"Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there.
Amalek lives throughout the Negev, while the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live by the sea and on the bank of the Jordan."29"Amalek is living in the land of the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites are living in the hill country, and the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan."
Caleb silenced the people on Moses' behalf and responded, "Let's go up and take control, because we can definitely conquer it."30Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, "We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it."
"We can't attack those people," the men who were with him said, "because they're too strong compared to us."31But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us."
So they put out this false report to the Israelis about the land that they had explored: "The land that we've explored is one that devours its inhabitants. All the people whom we observed were giants.32So they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size.
We also saw the Nephilim, the descendants of Anak. Compared to the Nephilim, as we see things, we're like grasshoppers, and that's their opinion of us!"33"There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."
