Sometime later, God tested Abraham. He called out to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered.1After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
God said, "Please take your son, your unique son whom you love—Isaac—and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him as a burnt offering there on one of the mountains that I will point out to you."2He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his male servants with him, along with his son Isaac. He cut the wood for the burnt offering and set out to go to the place about which God had spoken to him. 3So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
On the third day he looked ahead and saw the place from a distance.4On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.
Abraham ordered his two servants, "Both of you are to stay here with the donkey. Now as for the youth and me, we'll go up there, we'll worship, and then we'll return to you." 5Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”
Then Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. Abraham carried the fire and the knife. And so the two of them went on together.6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together.
Isaac addressed his father Abraham: "My father!" "I'm here, my son," Abraham replied. Isaac asked, "The fire and the wood are here, but where's the lamb for the burnt offering?"7And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
Abraham answered, "God will provide himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." The two of them went on together 8Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
and came to the place about which God had spoken. Abraham built an altar there, arranged the wood, tied up his son Isaac, and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. 9When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
Then he stretched out his hand and grabbed the knife to slaughter his son.10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
Just then, an angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven and said, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered.11But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
"Don't lay your hand on the youth!" he said. "Don't do anything to him, because I've just demonstrated that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only unique one, from me."12He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
Then Abraham looked up and behind him to see a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So Abraham went over, grabbed the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 13And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
Abraham named that place, "The LORD Will Provide," as it is told this day, "On the LORD's mountain, he will provide." 14So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”
The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 15And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven
and said, "I have taken an oath to swear by myself," declares the LORD, "that since you have carried this out and have not withheld your only unique son, 16and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in heaven and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the gates of their enemies. 17I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies,
Furthermore, through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my command."18and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
After this, Abraham returned to his servants and they set out together for Beer-sheba, where Abraham settled.19So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.
Now after these things somebody told Abraham, "Look, Milcah has given birth to sons for your brother Nahor. 20Now after these things it was told to Abraham, “Behold, Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor:
Uz is his firstborn, Buz is his brother, and Kemuel is the father of Aram, 21Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,
Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." 22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”
Bethuel fathered Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Nahor, Abraham's brother. 23(Bethuel fathered Rebekah.) These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
Also, his concubine Reumah gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.24Moreover, his concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
