Psalm 139
HCSB Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleNew Living Translation
For the choir director. A Davidic psalm. LORD, You have searched me and known me. 1O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. 2You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways. 3You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.
Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, LORD. 4You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD.
You have encircled me; You have placed Your hand on me. 5You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to reach it. 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!
Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? 7I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!
If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. 8If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.
If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, 9If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
even there Your hand will lead me; Your right hand will hold on to me. 10even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.
If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will be night"-- 11I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—
even the darkness is not dark to You. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to You. 12but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother's womb. 13You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, and I know this very well. 14Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
My bones were not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth. 15You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began. 16You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
God, how difficult Your thoughts are for me to comprehend; how vast their sum is! 17How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!
If I counted them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; when I wake up, I am still with You. 18I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!
God, if only You would kill the wicked-- you bloodthirsty men, stay away from me-- 19O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers!
who invoke You deceitfully. Your enemies swear by You falsely. 20They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name.
LORD, don't I hate those who hate You, and detest those who rebel against You? 21O LORD, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?
I hate them with extreme hatred; I consider them my enemies. 22Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies.
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. 23Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way. 24Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
