| 3Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength and the firstfruits of my virility, excelling in prominence, excelling in power. | 3"Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power. |
| 4Turbulent as water, you will no longer excel, because you got into your father's bed and you defiled it--he got into my bed. | 4Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father's bed, onto my couch and defiled it. |
| 5Simeon and Levi are brothers; their knives are vicious weapons. | 5"Simeon and Levi are brothers-- their swords are weapons of violence. |
| 6May I never enter their council; may I never join their assembly. For in their anger they kill men, and on a whim they hamstring oxen. | 6Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased. |
