Then God spoke all these words: | 1Then God spoke all these words, saying, |
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. | 2"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. |
Do not have other gods besides Me. | 3"You shall have no other gods before Me. |
Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. | 4"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. |
You must not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the fathers' sin, to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, | 5"You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, |
but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commands. | 6but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. |
Do not misuse the name of the LORD your God, because the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses His name. | 7"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. |
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy: | 8"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. |
You are to labor six days and do all your work, | 9"Six days you shall labor and do all your work, |
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You must not do any work--you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the foreigner who is within your gates. | 10but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. |
For the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy. | 11"For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. |
Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. | 12"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you. |
Do not murder. | 13"You shall not murder. |
Do not commit adultery. | 14"You shall not commit adultery. |
Do not steal. | 15"You shall not steal. |
Do not give false testimony against your neighbor. | 16"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. |
Do not covet your neighbor's house. Do not covet your neighbor's wife, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. | 17"You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor." |
All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it they trembled and stood at a distance." | 18All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance. |
You speak to us, and we will listen," they said to Moses, "but don't let God speak to us, or we will die." | 19Then they said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die." |
Moses responded to the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear Him and will not sin." | 20Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin." |
And the people remained standing at a distance as Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. | 21So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was. |
Then the LORD told Moses, "This is what you are to say to the Israelites: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven. | 22Then the LORD said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'You yourselves have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven. |
You must not make gods of silver to rival Me; you must not make gods of gold for yourselves." | 23You shall not make other gods besides Me; gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves. |
You must make an earthen altar for Me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats, as well as your cattle. I will come to you and bless you in every place where I cause My name to be remembered. | 24'You shall make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you. |
If you make a stone altar for Me, you must not build it out of cut stones. If you use your chisel on it, you will defile it. | 25'If you make an altar of stone for Me, you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your tool on it, you will profane it. |
You must not go up to My altar on steps, so that your nakedness is not exposed on it." | 26'And you shall not go up by steps to My altar, so that your nakedness will not be exposed on it.' |
