1The LORD spoke to Moses: " | 1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, |
2Speak to the entire Israelite community and tell them: Be holy because I, Yahweh your God, am holy." | 2“Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. |
3Each of you is to respect his mother and father. You are to keep My Sabbaths; I am Yahweh your God. | 3Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. |
4Do not turn to idols or make cast images of gods for yourselves; I am Yahweh your God." | 4Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am the LORD your God. |
5When you offer a fellowship sacrifice to the LORD, sacrifice it so that you may be accepted. | 5“When you offer a sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD, you shall offer it so that you may be accepted. |
6It is to be eaten on the day you sacrifice it or on the next day, but what remains on the third day must be burned up. | 6It shall be eaten the same day you offer it or on the day after, and anything left over until the third day shall be burned up with fire. |
7If any is eaten on the third day, it is a repulsive thing; it will not be accepted. | 7If it is eaten at all on the third day, it is tainted; it will not be accepted, |
8Anyone who eats it will bear his punishment, for he has profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person must be cut off from his people." | 8and everyone who eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned what is holy to the LORD, and that person shall be cut off from his people. |
9When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to reap to the very edge of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. | 9“When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. |
10You must not strip your vineyard bare or gather its fallen grapes. Leave them for the poor and the foreign resident; I am Yahweh your God." | 10And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the LORD your God. |
11You must not steal. You must not act deceptively or lie to one another. | 11“You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. |
12You must not swear falsely by My name, profaning the name of your God; I am Yahweh." | 12You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the LORD. |
13You must not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages due a hired hand must not remain with you until morning. | 13“You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning. |
14You must not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but you are to fear your God; I am Yahweh." | 14You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the LORD. |
15You must not act unjustly when deciding a case. Do not be partial to the poor or give preference to the rich; judge your neighbor fairly. | 15“You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. |
16You must not go about spreading slander among your people; you must not jeopardize your neighbor's life; I am Yahweh." | 16You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD. |
17You must not harbor hatred against your brother. Rebuke your neighbor directly, and you will not incur guilt because of him. | 17“You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. |
18Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am Yahweh." | 18You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. |
19You are to keep My statutes. You must not crossbreed two different kinds of your livestock, sow your fields with two kinds of seed, or put on a garment made of two kinds of material." | 19“You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let your cattle breed with a different kind. You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material. |
20If a man has sexual intercourse with a woman who is a slave designated for another man, but she has not been redeemed or given her freedom, there must be punishment. They are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed. | 20“If a man lies sexually with a woman who is a slave, assigned to another man and not yet ransomed or given her freedom, a distinction shall be made. They shall not be put to death, because she was not free; |
21However, he must bring a ram as his restitution offering to the LORD at the entrance to the tent of meeting. | 21but he shall bring his compensation to the LORD, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, a ram for a guilt offering. |
22The priest will make atonement on his behalf before the LORD with the ram of the restitution offering for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven for the sin he committed." | 22And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering before the LORD for his sin that he has committed, and he shall be forgiven for the sin that he has committed. |
23When you come into the land and plant any kind of tree for food, you are to consider the fruit forbidden. It will be forbidden to you for three years; it is not to be eaten. | 23“When you come into the land and plant any kind of tree for food, then you shall regard its fruit as forbidden. Three years it shall be forbidden to you; it must not be eaten. |
24In the fourth year all its fruit must be consecrated as a praise offering to the LORD. | 24And in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, an offering of praise to the LORD. |
25But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit. In this way its yield will increase for you; I am Yahweh your God." | 25But in the fifth year you may eat of its fruit, to increase its yield for you: I am the LORD your God. |
26You are not to eat anything with blood in it. You are not to practice divination or sorcery. | 26“You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes. |
27You are not to cut off the hair at the sides of your head or mar the edge of your beard. | 27You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. |
28You are not to make gashes on your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves; I am Yahweh." | 28You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the LORD. |
29Do not debase your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will be prostituted and filled with depravity. | 29“Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, lest the land fall into prostitution and the land become full of depravity. |
30You must keep My Sabbaths and revere My sanctuary; I am Yahweh." | 30You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD. |
31Do not turn to mediums or consult spiritists, or you will be defiled by them; I am Yahweh your God." | 31“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the LORD your God. |
32You are to rise in the presence of the elderly and honor the old. Fear your God; I am Yahweh." | 32“You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the LORD. |
33When a foreigner lives with you in your land, you must not oppress him. | 33“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. |
34You must regard the foreigner who lives with you as the native-born among you. You are to love him as yourself, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt; I am Yahweh your God." | 34You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. |
35You must not be unfair in measurements of length, weight, or volume. | 35“You shall do no wrong in judgment, in measures of length or weight or quantity. |
36You are to have honest balances, honest weights, an honest dry measure, and an honest liquid measure; I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. | 36You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. |
37You must keep all My statutes and all My ordinances and do them; I am Yahweh." | 37And you shall observe all my statutes and all my rules, and do them: I am the LORD.” |
