English Standard Version | New Living Translation |
Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. | 1Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. |
It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. | 2It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones. |
Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. | 3Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. |
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. | 4Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands. |
Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. | 5How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates. |
