Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. | 1Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor uselessly. Unless the LORD guards the city, its security forces keep watch uselessly. |
It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. | 2It is useless to get up early and to stay up late, eating the food of exhausting labor— truly he gives sleep to those he loves. |
Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. | 3Children are a gift from the LORD; a productive womb, the LORD's reward. |
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. | 4As arrows in the hand of a warrior, so also are children born during one's youth. |
Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. | 5How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be ashamed as they confront their enemies at the city gate. |
