English Standard Version | New International Version |
Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob! | 1For the director of music. According to gittith. Of Asaph. Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob! |
Raise a song; sound the tambourine, the sweet lyre with the harp. | 2Begin the music, strike the timbrel, play the melodious harp and lyre. |
Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day. | 3Sound the ram's horn at the New Moon, and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival; |
For it is a statute for Israel, a rule of the God of Jacob. | 4this is a decree for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob. |
He made it a decree in Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt. I hear a language I had not known: | 5When God went out against Egypt, he established it as a statute for Joseph. I heard an unknown voice say: |
“I relieved your shoulder of the burden; your hands were freed from the basket. | 6"I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket. |
In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah | 7In your distress you called and I rescued you, I answered you out of a thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. |
Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me! | 8Hear me, my people, and I will warn you-- if you would only listen to me, Israel! |
There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god. | 9You shall have no foreign god among you; you shall not worship any god other than me. |
I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. | 10I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. |
“But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. | 11"But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. |
So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. | 12So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. |
Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways! | 13"If my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways, |
I would soon subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes. | 14how quickly I would subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes! |
Those who hate the LORD would cringe toward him, and their fate would last forever. | 15Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him, and their punishment would last forever. |
But he would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” | 16But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you." |
