1Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob! | 1For the music director; according to the gittith style; by Asaph. Shout for joy to God, our source of strength! Shout out to the God of Jacob! |
2Raise a song; sound the tambourine, the sweet lyre with the harp. | 2Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant sounding harp, and the ten-stringed instrument! |
3Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day. | 3Sound the ram's horn on the day of the new moon, and on the day of the full moon when our festival begins. |
4For it is a statute for Israel, a rule of the God of Jacob. | 4For observing the festival is a requirement for Israel; it is an ordinance given by the God of Jacob. |
5He made it a decree in Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt. I hear a language I had not known: | 5He decreed it as a regulation in Joseph, when he attacked the land of Egypt. I heard a voice I did not recognize. |
6“I relieved your shoulder of the burden; your hands were freed from the basket. | 6It said: "I removed the burden from his shoulder; his hands were released from holding the basket. |
7In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah | 7In your distress you called out and I rescued you. I answered you from a dark thundercloud. I tested you at the waters of Meribah. (Selah) |
8Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me! | 8I said, 'Listen, my people! I will warn you! O Israel, if only you would obey me! |
9There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god. | 9There must be no other god among you. You must not worship a foreign god. |
10I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. | 10I am the LORD, your God, the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it!' |
11“But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. | 11But my people did not obey me; Israel did not submit to me. |
12So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. | 12I gave them over to their stubborn desires; they did what seemed right to them. |
13Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways! | 13If only my people would obey me! If only Israel would keep my commands! |
14I would soon subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes. | 14Then I would quickly subdue their enemies, and attack their adversaries." |
15Those who hate the LORD would cringe toward him, and their fate would last forever. | 15(May those who hate the LORD cower in fear before him! May they be permanently humiliated!) |
16But he would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” | 16"I would feed Israel the best wheat, and would satisfy your appetite with honey from the rocky cliffs." |
