O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses; you have been angry; oh, restore us. | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "The Lily of the Covenant." A miktam of David. For teaching. When he fought Aram Naharaim and Aram Zobah, and when Joab returned and struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. You have rejected us, God, and burst upon us; you have been angry--now restore us! |
You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open; repair its breaches, for it totters. | 2You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its fractures, for it is quaking. |
You have made your people see hard things; you have given us wine to drink that made us stagger. | 3You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger. |
You have set up a banner for those who fear you, that they may flee to it from the bow. Selah | 4But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. |
That your beloved ones may be delivered, give salvation by your right hand and answer us! | 5Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered. |
God has spoken in his holiness: “With exultation I will divide up Shechem and portion out the Vale of Succoth. | 6God has spoken from his sanctuary: "In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth. |
Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet; Judah is my scepter. | 7Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah is my scepter. |
Moab is my washbasin; upon Edom I cast my shoe; over Philistia I shout in triumph.” | 8Moab is my washbasin, on Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph." |
Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? | 9Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? |
Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go forth, O God, with our armies. | 10Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us and no longer go out with our armies? |
Oh, grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! | 11Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless. |
With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes. | 12With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies. |
