1It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; | 1A psalm; a song for the Sabbath day. It is fitting to thank the LORD, and to sing praises to your name, O sovereign One! |
2to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, | 2It is fitting to proclaim your loyal love in the morning, and your faithfulness during the night, |
3to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. | 3to the accompaniment of a ten-stringed instrument and a lyre, to the accompaniment of the meditative tone of the harp. |
4For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. | 4For you, O LORD, have made me happy by your work. I will sing for joy because of what you have done. |
5How great are your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep! | 5How great are your works, O LORD! Your plans are very intricate! |
6The stupid man cannot know; the fool cannot understand this: | 6The spiritually insensitive do not recognize this; the fool does not understand this. |
7that though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction forever; | 7When the wicked sprout up like grass, and all the evildoers glisten, it is so that they may be annihilated. |
8but you, O LORD, are on high forever. | 8But you, O LORD, reign forever! |
9For behold, your enemies, O LORD, for behold, your enemies shall perish; all evildoers shall be scattered. | 9Indeed, look at your enemies, O LORD! Indeed, look at how your enemies perish! All the evildoers are scattered! |
10But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have poured over me fresh oil. | 10You exalt my horn like that of a wild ox. I am covered with fresh oil. |
11My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants. | 11I gloat in triumph over those who tried to ambush me; I hear the defeated cries of the evil foes who attacked me. |
12The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. | 12The godly grow like a palm tree; they grow high like a cedar in Lebanon. |
13They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. | 13Planted in the LORD's house, they grow in the courts of our God. |
14They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, | 14They bear fruit even when they are old; they are filled with vitality and have many leaves. |
15to declare that the LORD is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. | 15So they proclaim that the LORD, my protector, is just and never unfair. |
