God, listen to my prayer and do not hide from my plea for help. | 1Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help! |
Pay attention to me and answer me. I am restless and in turmoil with my complaint, | 2Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles. |
because of the enemy's words, because of the pressure of the wicked. For they bring down disaster on me and harass me in anger. | 3My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down. |
My heart shudders within me; terrors of death sweep over me. | 4My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. |
Fear and trembling grip me; horror has overwhelmed me. | 5Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. |
I said, "If only I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. | 6Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! |
How far away I would flee; I would stay in the wilderness. Selah | 7I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude |
I would hurry to my shelter from the raging wind and the storm." | 8How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred. |
Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city; | 9Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. |
day and night they make the rounds on its walls. Crime and trouble are within it; | 10Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. |
destruction is inside it; oppression and deceit never leave its marketplace. | 11Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets. |
Now it is not an enemy who insults me--otherwise I could bear it; it is not a foe who rises up against me--otherwise I could hide from him. | 12It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. |
But it is you, a man who is my peer, my companion and good friend! | 13Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. |
We used to have close fellowship; we walked with the crowd into the house of God. | 14What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God. |
Let death take them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, because evil is in their homes and within them. | 15Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them. |
But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. | 16But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me. |
I complain and groan morning, noon, and night, and he hears my voice. | 17Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice. |
Though many are against me, he will redeem me from my battle unharmed. | 18He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. |
God, the one enthroned from long ago, will hear and will humiliate them Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. | 19God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God. |
My friend acts violently against those at peace with him; he violates his covenant. | 20As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. |
His buttery words are smooth, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, but they are drawn swords. | 21His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers! |
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be shaken. | 22Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. |
God, you will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and treachery will not live out half their days. But I will trust in you. | 23But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me. |
