The LORD answered Job: | 1The LORD said to Job: |
Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who argues with God give an answer. | 2"Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!" |
Then Job answered the LORD: | 3Then Job answered the LORD: |
I am so insignificant. How can I answer you? I place my hand over my mouth. | 4"I am unworthy--how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. |
I have spoken once, and I will not reply; twice, but now I can add nothing. | 5I spoke once, but I have no answer-- twice, but I will say no more." |
Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: | 6Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm: |
Get ready to answer me like a man; When I question you, you will inform me. | 7"Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. |
Would you really challenge my justice? Would you declare me guilty to justify yourself? | 8"Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself? |
Do you have an arm like God's? Can you thunder with a voice like his? | 9Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his? |
Adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, and clothe yourself with honor and glory. | 10Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty. |
Pour out your raging anger; look on every proud person and humiliate him. | 11Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low, |
Look on every proud person and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand. | 12look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand. |
Hide them together in the dust; imprison them in the grave. | 13Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave. |
Then I will confess to you that your own right hand can deliver you. | 14Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you. |
Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like cattle. | 15"Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. |
Look at the strength of his back and the power in the muscles of his belly. | 16What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly! |
He stiffens his tail like a cedar tree; the tendons of his thighs are woven firmly together. | 17Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit. |
His bones are bronze tubes; his limbs are like iron rods. | 18Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron. |
He is the foremost of God's works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him. | 19It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword. |
The hills yield food for him, while all sorts of wild animals play there. | 20The hills bring it their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby. |
He lies under the lotus plants, hiding in the protection of marshy reeds. | 21Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh. |
Lotus plants cover him with their shade; the willows by the brook surround him. | 22The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it. |
Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid; he remains confident, even if the Jordan surges up to his mouth. | 23A raging river does not alarm it; it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth. |
Can anyone capture him while he looks on, or pierce his nose with snares? | 24Can anyone capture it by the eyes, or trap it and pierce its nose? |
