LORD, you have searched me and known me. | 1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD, You have searched me and known me. |
You know when I sit down and when I stand up; you understand my thoughts from far away. | 2You know when I sit and when I rise; You understand my thoughts from afar. |
You observe my travels and my rest; you are aware of all my ways. | 3You search out my path and my lying down; You are aware of all my ways. |
Before a word is on my tongue, you know all about it, LORD. | 4Even before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, O LORD. |
You have encircled me; you have placed your hand on me. | 5You hem me in behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me. |
This wondrous knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to reach it. | 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. |
Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? | 7Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? |
If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. | 8If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. |
If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, | 9If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea, |
even there your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold on to me. | 10even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast. |
If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will be night"-- | 11If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light become night around me”— |
even the darkness is not dark to you. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to you. | 12even the darkness is not dark to You, but the night shines like the day, for darkness is as light to You. |
For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. | 13For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. |
I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well. | 14I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. |
My bones were not hidden from you when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth. | 15My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. |
Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began. | 16Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be. |
God, how precious your thoughts are to me; how vast their sum is! | 17How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God, how vast is their sum! |
If I counted them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; when I wake up, I am still with you. | 18If I were to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; and when I awake, I am still with You. |
God, if only you would kill the wicked--you bloodthirsty men, stay away from me-- | 19O God, that You would slay the wicked—away from me, you bloodthirsty men— |
who invoke you deceitfully. Your enemies swear by you falsely. | 20who speak of You deceitfully; Your enemies take Your name in vain. |
LORD, don't I hate those who hate you, and detest those who rebel against you? | 21Do I not hate those who hate You, O LORD, and detest those who rise against You? |
I hate them with extreme hatred; I consider them my enemies. | 22I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them as my enemies. |
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. | 23Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. |
See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way. | 24See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting. |
