For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.” | 1I said to myself, “I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.” |
I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred. | 2But as I stood there in silence— not even speaking of good things— the turmoil within me grew worse. |
My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: | 3The more I thought about it, the hotter I got, igniting a fire of words: |
“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is. | 4“LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered— how fleeting my life is. |
You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah | 5You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.” Interlude |
Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away. | 6We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. |
And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You. | 7And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. |
Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools. | 8Rescue me from my rebellion. Do not let fools mock me. |
I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done. | 9I am silent before you; I won’t say a word, for my punishment is from you. |
Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand. | 10But please stop striking me! I am exhausted by the blows from your hand. |
You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah | 11When you discipline us for our sins, you consume like a moth what is precious to us. Each of us is but a breath. Interlude |
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers. | 12Hear my prayer, O LORD! Listen to my cries for help! Don’t ignore my tears. For I am your guest— a traveler passing through, as my ancestors were before me. |
Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.” | 13Leave me alone so I can smile again before I am gone and exist no more. |
