For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.” | 1I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence." |
I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred. | 2I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified. |
My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: | 3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue: |
“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is. | 4"LORD, make me aware of my end and the number of my days so that I will know how short-lived I am. |
You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah | 5In fact, you have made my days just inches long, and my life span is as nothing to you. Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor. Selah |
Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away. | 6Yes, a person goes about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them. |
And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You. | 7"Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you. |
Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools. | 8Rescue me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools. |
I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done. | 9I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what you have done. |
Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand. | 10Remove your torment from me. Because of the force of your hand I am finished. |
You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah | 11You discipline a person with punishment for iniquity, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; yes, every human being is only a vapor. Selah |
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers. | 12"Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am here with you as an alien, a temporary resident like all my ancestors. |
Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.” | 13Turn your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone." |
