For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.” | 1For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Davidic psalm. I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence." |
I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred. | 2I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified. |
My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: | 3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:" |
“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is. | 4 LORD, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how short-lived I am. |
You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah | 5You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Selah " |
Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away. | 6Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them. |
And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You. | 7Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. |
Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools. | 8Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools. |
I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done. | 9I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done. |
Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand. | 10Remove Your torment from me; I fade away because of the force of Your hand. |
You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah | 11You discipline a man with punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; every man is only a vapor. Selah " |
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers. | 12Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a foreigner residing with You, a temporary resident like all my fathers. |
Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.” | 13Turn Your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone." |
