For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A Miktam of David for instruction. When he fought Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned and struck down 12,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. You have rejected us, O God; You have broken us; You have been angry; restore us! | 1For the music director; according to the shushan-eduth style; a prayer of David written to instruct others. It was written when he fought against Aram Naharaim and Aram-Zobah. That was when Joab turned back and struck down 12,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. O God, you have rejected us. You suddenly turned on us in your anger. Please restore us! |
You have shaken the land and torn it open. Heal its fractures, for it is quaking. | 2You made the earth quake; you split it open. Repair its breaches, for it is ready to fall. |
You have shown Your people hardship; we are staggered from the wine You made us drink. | 3You have made your people experience hard times; you have made us drink intoxicating wine. |
You have raised a banner for those who fear You, that they may flee the bow. Selah | 4You have given your loyal followers a rallying flag, so that they might seek safety from the bow. (Selah) |
Respond and save us with Your right hand, that Your beloved may be delivered. | 5Deliver by your power and answer me, so that the ones you love may be safe. |
God has spoken from His sanctuary: “I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem and apportion the Valley of Succoth. | 6God has spoken in his sanctuary: "I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem; the Valley of Succoth I will measure off. |
Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim is My helmet, Judah is My scepter. | 7Gilead belongs to me, as does Manasseh! Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my royal scepter. |
Moab is My washbasin; upon Edom I toss My sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.” | 8Moab is my washbasin. I will make Edom serve me. I will shout in triumph over Philistia." |
Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? | 9Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will bring me to Edom? |
Have You not rejected us, O God? Will You no longer march out, O God, with our armies? | 10Have you not rejected us, O God? O God, you do not go into battle with our armies. |
Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. | 11Give us help against the enemy, for any help men might offer is futile. |
With God we will perform with valor, and He will trample our enemies. | 12By God's power we will conquer; he will trample down our enemies. |
