Now the Spirit expressly states that in later times some will abandon the faith to follow deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons,1But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,
influenced by the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences are seared with a hot iron.2by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,
They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from certain foods that God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.3men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.
For every creation of God is good, and nothing that is received with thanksgiving should be rejected,4For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude;
because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.5for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.
By pointing out these things to the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of faith and sound instruction that you have followed.6In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.
But reject irreverent, silly myths. Instead, train yourself for godliness.7But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness;
For physical exercise is of limited value, but godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for the present life and for the one to come.8for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance.9It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance.
To this end we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of everyone, and especially of those who believe.10For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.
Command and teach these things.11Prescribe and teach these things.
Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.12Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching.13Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.
Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given you through the prophecy spoken over you at the laying on of the hands of the elders.14Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.
Be diligent in these matters and absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.15Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.
Pay close attention to your life and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you.16Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.
