| 1Some time later, David defeated the Philistines, subdued them, and took Gath and its villages from the hand of the Philistines. | 1Now after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of the Philistines. |
| 2David also defeated the Moabites, and they became subject to David and brought him tribute. | 2And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became David's servants, and brought gifts. |
| 3As far as Hamath, David also defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah, who had marched out to establish his dominion along the Euphrates River. | 3And David smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates. |
| 4David captured from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand charioteers, and twenty thousand foot soldiers, and he hamstrung all the horses except a hundred he kept for the chariots. | 4And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: David also houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them an hundred chariots. |
| 5When the Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand men. | 5And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men. |
| 6Then he placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to David and brought him tribute. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he went. | 6Then David put garrisons in Syriadamascus; and the Syrians became David's servants, and brought gifts. Thus the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. |
| 7And David took the gold shields that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. | 7And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. |
| 8And from Tibhath and Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a large amount of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze Sea, the pillars, and various bronze articles. | 8Likewise from Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer, brought David very much brass, wherewith Solomon made the brasen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass. |
| 9When King Tou of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, | 9Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah; |
| 10he sent his son Hadoram to greet King David and bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze, | 10He sent Hadoram his son to king David, to inquire of his welfare, and to congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass. |
| 11and King David dedicated these to the LORD, along with the silver and gold he had carried off from all these nations—from Edom and Moab, and from the Ammonites, Philistines, and Amalekites. | 11Them also king David dedicated unto the LORD, with the silver and the gold that he brought from all these nations; from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek. |
| 12Moreover, Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. | 12Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah slew of the Edomites in the valley of salt eighteen thousand. |
| 13He placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he went. | 13And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became David's servants. Thus the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. |
| 14Thus David reigned over all Israel and administered justice and righteousness for all his people: | 14So David reigned over all Israel, and executed judgment and justice among all his people. |
| 15Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder; | 15And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, recorder. |
| 16Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was the scribe; | 16And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Abimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Shavsha was scribe; |
| 17Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief officials at the king’s side. | 17And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief about the king. |
