Nehemiah 12
1. The priests and the Levites which came up with Zerubbabel.
10. The succession of high priests.
22. Certain chief Levites.
27. The solemnity of the dedication of the walls.
44. The offices of priests and Levites appointed in the temple.

They performed the service of their God
This phrase emphasizes the dedication and commitment of the Levites and priests to their divine duties. The Hebrew root for "service" (עֲבוֹדָה, avodah) implies labor or work, often associated with worship and religious duties. Historically, this reflects the restoration of temple practices after the Babylonian exile, highlighting the importance of returning to God's ordained worship. The phrase underscores the continuity of worship practices as a central aspect of Israel's identity and covenant relationship with God.

and the service of purification
Purification rituals were essential in maintaining the holiness required for temple service. The Hebrew word for "purification" (טָהֳרָה, taharah) signifies cleansing and sanctification, both physically and spiritually. These rituals were vital for the community's relationship with God, ensuring that the priests and Levites were ceremonially clean to perform their duties. This reflects the broader biblical theme of holiness and the need for God's people to be set apart.

along with the singers and gatekeepers
The inclusion of singers and gatekeepers highlights the organized structure of temple worship. Singers played a crucial role in leading the community in praise, while gatekeepers maintained order and security. This structure, rooted in the commands of David, illustrates the comprehensive nature of worship, involving various roles and responsibilities. It also points to the communal aspect of worship, where each member contributes to the glorification of God.

according to the command of David and his son Solomon
This phrase connects the practices of Nehemiah's time to the golden age of Israel under David and Solomon. David, known for his heart of worship, and Solomon, for his wisdom and temple building, set a precedent for organized and God-centered worship. The reference to their command underscores the legitimacy and continuity of these practices, affirming that the restoration efforts align with the divinely inspired traditions of Israel's greatest kings. This continuity reassures the post-exilic community of their rightful place in God's redemptive history.

(45) Kept the ward.--This should be read differently. The priests and Levites kept the ward of their God, and the ward of purification, and the singers and porters, &c. To "keep the ward" is to observe the regular times and seasons of sacrifice and thanksgiving.

Verse 45. - This verse is wrongly translated in the A. V. It should be rendered, as in the Vulgate and the Septuagint - "And they (i.e. the priests and Levites) maintained the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, and the singers, and the porters (i.e. the institutions of singers and porters), according to the ordinance of David and of Solomon his son." Maintaining the ward of their God is serving regularly in the temple at the times appointed; maintaining the ward of the purification is observing the rules for the purifying of the holy things which had been laid down by David (1 Chronicles 23:28).
