Prophetic Foundations

The Old Testament prophets foretold the coming of a Messiah who would establish a reign of peace. The peace that Christ offers is distinct from worldly peace; it is a divine peace that calms the troubled heart and dispels fear. It is a peace that is rooted in the reconciliation between God and humanity, achieved through Christ's sacrificial death and resurrection.

The Kingdom of Peace

The government of Christ is often described as the Kingdom of God, a spiritual realm where Christ reigns supreme. Romans 14:17 states, "For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit." This kingdom is marked by peace, which is a fruit of the Spirit and a hallmark of the believer's life under Christ's lordship. The peace of Christ governs the hearts of believers, guiding them in their relationships with God and others.

Peace Among Believers

The government of Christ also manifests in the communal peace among His followers. Ephesians 2:14-16 explains, "For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility... His purpose was to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and to reconcile both of them to God in one body through the cross, by which He extinguished their hostility." Through Christ, believers are united into one body, the Church, where peace prevails as a testament to the reconciling power of the gospel.

Eschatological Peace

The ultimate fulfillment of peace under the government of Christ is eschatological, pointing to the future consummation of His kingdom. Revelation 21:3-4 envisions a new heaven and a new earth where God dwells with His people: "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.'" This vision encapsulates the ultimate peace that will be realized when Christ's government is fully established, bringing an end to all suffering and strife.

In summary, peace as a result of the government of Christ is a central theme in Scripture, encompassing personal tranquility, communal harmony, and the ultimate restoration of all creation under His righteous rule.
