Christian Conduct: Believing God

Believing God is a fundamental aspect of Christian conduct, deeply rooted in the Scriptures and essential for a life of faith. This belief is not merely intellectual assent but involves trust, reliance, and obedience to God and His promises. The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings that illustrate the importance and nature of believing God.

Faith as the Foundation

The concept of believing God is closely tied to faith, which is described in Hebrews 11:1 as "the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see." Faith is the foundation of a believer's relationship with God, as it is through faith that one is justified and made righteous. Romans 1:17 states, "For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'"

Examples of Belief in Scripture

The Bible is replete with examples of individuals who believed God and were commended for their faith. Abraham is a quintessential example, as he believed God's promise that he would become the father of many nations despite his old age and Sarah's barrenness. Genesis 15:6 records, "Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness." This act of belief is highlighted in the New Testament as a model of faith (Romans 4:3).

Another notable example is the faith of Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt, trusting in God's promise of deliverance and provision. Hebrews 11:24-27 recounts Moses' faith, emphasizing his choice to endure hardship with the people of God rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

The Call to Believe

Believing God is not only exemplified in the lives of biblical figures but is also a direct command to believers. Jesus Himself calls for belief in God and in Him as the pathway to eternal life. In John 14:1 , Jesus says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me." This belief is not passive but active, requiring a commitment to follow Christ and His teachings.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in enabling believers to trust in God. The Spirit works in the hearts of believers to strengthen their faith and deepen their understanding of God's truth. Ephesians 1:13-14 speaks of believers being "sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession, to the praise of His glory."

Challenges to Belief

Believing God can be challenging, especially in the face of trials and uncertainties. The Bible acknowledges these challenges and encourages believers to persevere. James 1:2-4 advises, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

The Reward of Belief

The Scriptures assure believers that their faith is not in vain. Hebrews 11:6 declares, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." The ultimate reward for believing God is eternal life, as promised in John 3:16 : "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Believing God is a dynamic and essential aspect of Christian conduct, encompassing trust, obedience, and reliance on God's promises. Through faith, believers are called to live lives that reflect their confidence in God's character and His Word.
