Afflicted Saints: should Keep the Pious Resolutions Made During Afflictions
Jump to: Torrey'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms

In the journey of faith, believers often encounter periods of affliction that test their resolve and commitment to God. These times of trial, while challenging, serve as opportunities for spiritual growth and deeper reliance on the Lord. It is during these moments that saints may make pious resolutions—commitments to live more faithfully, to trust God more fully, or to serve Him more diligently. The Bible provides guidance and encouragement for maintaining these resolutions even after the affliction has passed.

Biblical Foundation

The Scriptures are replete with examples and teachings that underscore the importance of keeping vows and resolutions made to God. In Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 , we read, "When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it, because He takes no pleasure in fools. Fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it." This passage highlights the seriousness with which God views our commitments to Him, urging believers to be faithful in their promises.

Examples of Faithfulness

Throughout the Bible, we find individuals who, despite their afflictions, remained steadfast in their commitments to God. Job, for instance, is a quintessential example of maintaining integrity and faithfulness amidst severe trials. In Job 2:10 , he declares, "Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" Job's unwavering faith and adherence to his pious resolutions serve as a model for believers facing their own afflictions.

Similarly, the Apostle Paul, in his numerous trials and sufferings, remained committed to his mission and calling. In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 , Paul writes, "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." Paul's resolve to continue his ministry despite his afflictions exemplifies the strength found in keeping one's resolutions.

Encouragement and Exhortation

Believers are encouraged to remember the faithfulness of God during their afflictions and to rely on His strength to uphold their resolutions. Psalm 34:19 assures us, "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him from them all." This promise of deliverance provides hope and motivation to remain steadfast.

Moreover, James 1:2-4 offers a perspective on the purpose of trials: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." This passage encourages believers to view afflictions as a means of spiritual refinement, reinforcing the importance of keeping resolutions made during such times.

Practical Application

To maintain pious resolutions made during afflictions, believers should engage in regular prayer, seeking God's guidance and strength. They should immerse themselves in Scripture, drawing encouragement and wisdom from the Word of God. Fellowship with other believers can also provide support and accountability, helping to sustain one's commitments.

In summary, afflicted saints are called to honor the resolutions made during times of trial, trusting in God's faithfulness and strength to see them through. By doing so, they not only grow in their personal faith but also bear witness to the transformative power of God's grace in their lives.
