Submissiveness, as a biblical concept, refers to the act of yielding or surrendering one's own will to the authority or will of another, often in the context of relationships ordained by God. This concept is deeply rooted in the Scriptures and is seen as a virtue that reflects humility, obedience, and respect for God's established order.

Biblical Foundation

The principle of submissiveness is woven throughout the Bible, beginning with the creation narrative. In Genesis, the order of creation establishes a framework for understanding roles and authority. Genesis 2:18-24 describes the creation of Eve as a helper suitable for Adam, indicating a complementary relationship where submissiveness plays a role in harmony and unity.

Submissiveness in Marriage

One of the most discussed aspects of submissiveness in the Bible is within the context of marriage. Ephesians 5:22-24 states, "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything." This passage highlights the parallel between the marital relationship and the relationship between Christ and the Church, emphasizing the spiritual significance of submissiveness.

However, this call to submissiveness is balanced by the command to husbands in Ephesians 5:25 : "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her." The husband's role is to love sacrificially, creating an environment where the wife's submission is a response to loving leadership.

Submissiveness in the Church

Submissiveness is also a key principle within the church. Hebrews 13:17 instructs believers, "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who must give an account. Allow them to do this with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you." This verse underscores the importance of respecting and yielding to church leadership, recognizing their responsibility before God.

Submissiveness to Governing Authorities

The Bible also addresses the believer's relationship to secular authorities. Romans 13:1-2 teaches, "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." This passage affirms that submission to government is part of God's order, provided it does not conflict with God's commands.

Submissiveness to God

Ultimately, all forms of submissiveness are rooted in submission to God. James 4:7 exhorts believers, "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Submission to God is foundational, as it aligns the believer's will with God's purposes and empowers them to resist evil.

The Example of Christ

The ultimate example of submissiveness is found in Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:5-8 describes Christ's humility and obedience: "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." Christ's submission to the Father's will, even unto death, serves as the supreme model for believers.

Conclusion

Submissiveness, as taught in the Bible, is a multifaceted concept that applies to various relationships and contexts. It is a reflection of divine order and is characterized by humility, respect, and a willingness to yield to God's authority and the authorities He has established.
