In biblical times, the term "stool" can refer to a variety of objects, ranging from simple seating furniture to more specific items used in childbirth. The concept of a stool is mentioned in several contexts within the Bible, each carrying its own cultural and historical significance.

1. Seating Furniture: In ancient Israel, stools were basic pieces of furniture used for sitting. Unlike modern chairs, stools in biblical times were often simple and functional, made from wood or stone. They were used in homes and places of gathering, serving as a practical item for daily life. The simplicity of stools reflects the modest lifestyle of the people during biblical times.

2. Childbirth Stool: One of the more specific uses of the term "stool" in the Bible is found in the context of childbirth. In Exodus 1:16, Pharaoh instructs the Hebrew midwives, "When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them as they deliver. If it is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live." The term "birthstool" is implied here, referring to a special seat or support used by women during labor. This stool was designed to aid in the birthing process, providing comfort and support to the mother.

3. Symbolic and Ritual Use: Stools can also have symbolic meanings in the Bible. They may represent authority or a place of honor. For example, in some ancient Near Eastern cultures, a stool or footstool could signify the subjugation of enemies, as seen in Psalm 110:1, "The LORD said to my Lord: 'Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.'" Here, the footstool symbolizes the complete defeat and submission of adversaries under the authority of the Messiah.

4. Cultural Context: Understanding the use of stools in the Bible requires an appreciation of the cultural and historical context of the ancient Near East. Stools were not only practical items but also carried social and symbolic meanings. They were part of the everyday life of the Israelites and other ancient peoples, reflecting their customs, social structures, and religious practices.

In summary, the term "stool" in the Bible encompasses a range of meanings, from a simple piece of furniture to a significant object in childbirth and a symbol of authority and victory. Each mention of a stool in the Scriptures provides insight into the daily life and spiritual symbolism of the biblical world.

stool ('obhnayim): It is not clear what the character and purpose of this stool were Septuagint has no reference to it). It seems to have been a chair of a peculiar sort upon which a woman reclined in parturition (Exodus 1:16). The Hebrew word is in the dual number and primarily means "two stones." The only other place where it occurs is Jeremiah 18:3, where it is rendered "wheels" Septuagint epi ton lithon, "on the stones"). In 2 Kings 4:10, the word translated in the King James Version as "stool" (kicce') is in the Revised Version (British and American) more correctly translated "seat."
