Shedeur is a biblical figure mentioned in the Old Testament, specifically within the context of the wilderness journey of the Israelites. He is recognized as the father of Elizur, who was a leader of the tribe of Reuben during the time of the Exodus.

Biblical References:

1. Numbers 1:5 · In the census of the Israelite community, Shedeur is mentioned as the father of Elizur, who is appointed as the leader of the tribe of Reuben. The verse states: "These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur."

2. Numbers 2:10 · Shedeur's name appears again in the arrangement of the camp of Israel. The tribe of Reuben, led by Elizur son of Shedeur, is positioned on the south side of the tabernacle. The verse reads: "On the south side, the divisions of the camp of Reuben are to camp under their standard, with the leader of the Reubenites being Elizur son of Shedeur."

3. Numbers 7:30 · During the dedication of the altar, Elizur son of Shedeur is noted for bringing his offering on behalf of the tribe of Reuben. The verse records: "On the fourth day Elizur son of Shedeur, the leader of the Reubenites, drew near."

4. Numbers 10:18 · In the order of march, the tribe of Reuben, led by Elizur son of Shedeur, is mentioned as setting out according to their divisions. The verse states: "Then the divisions of the camp of Reuben set out under their standard, with Elizur son of Shedeur in command."

Historical and Theological Context:

Shedeur's mention in the Bible is primarily in relation to his son, Elizur, who played a significant role as a leader of the tribe of Reuben. The tribe of Reuben, being the descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob, held a prominent position among the tribes of Israel. The leadership of Elizur, and by extension the mention of Shedeur, underscores the importance of familial lineage and tribal leadership in the organization and governance of the Israelite community during their wilderness journey.

The role of Shedeur, though not extensively detailed, is significant in understanding the structure of Israelite society, where family heads and tribal leaders were integral to maintaining order and facilitating communication between the people and Moses, the leader appointed by God. The repeated mention of Shedeur in the context of his son’s leadership highlights the biblical emphasis on heritage and the passing down of responsibilities through generations.

Name Meaning:

The name Shedeur is of Hebrew origin, and while its exact meaning is not definitively established, it is often interpreted as "Shaddai is a flame" or "the Almighty is a fire," reflecting a theophoric element that attributes a characteristic of God (El Shaddai) to the individual. This naming convention is consistent with the biblical tradition of embedding divine attributes within personal names, signifying a connection to God and His attributes.

In summary, Shedeur, though a minor figure in the biblical narrative, is an essential link in the lineage and leadership of the tribe of Reuben, illustrating the importance of family and tribal identity in the history of Israel.

SHEDEUR

shed'-e-ur, she-de'-ur (shedhe'ur, "daybreak"; Codex Vaticanus Sediour, Ediour): The father of Elizur, the chief of Reuben (Numbers 1:5; Numbers 2:10; Numbers 7:30). French Delitzsch correctly conceives the name as an Assyrian compound, sad uri, "daybreak." Cf, however, Gray, HPN, 169, 197, who emends the text to read Shaddai 'Ur, "Shaddai is flame."
