The term "sardine" in the Bible refers to a precious stone, known today as the sardius or carnelian. It is mentioned in the context of biblical descriptions of divine visions and the adornment of sacred objects. The sardine stone is noted for its deep red color, which is often associated with beauty, power, and divine majesty.

Biblical References:

1. Revelation 4:3 : "And the One seated there looked like jasper and carnelian. A rainbow that gleamed like an emerald encircled the throne." In this passage, the sardine stone, translated as "carnelian" in the Berean Standard Bible, is part of the vivid imagery used to describe the appearance of God’s throne in heaven. The stone's rich, red hue symbolizes the glory and majesty of God, contributing to the awe-inspiring vision experienced by the Apostle John.

2. Exodus 28:17-20 : The sardine stone is also part of the high priest's breastplate, known as the Breastplate of Judgment. "And mount on it a setting of gemstones—four rows of stones: The first row shall be a row of ruby, topaz, and emerald; the second row shall be a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond; the third row shall be a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; and the fourth row shall be a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper. Mount these stones in gold filigree settings." While the Berean Standard Bible does not specifically mention "sardine" in this passage, the stone is traditionally identified with the sardius or carnelian, which is often included in translations as part of the breastplate's adornment. This inclusion signifies the beauty and sacredness of the priestly garments, reflecting the glory of God’s covenant with Israel.

Symbolism and Significance:

The sardine stone's deep red color is often interpreted as a symbol of sacrifice and redemption, themes central to the Christian faith. Its presence in the high priest's breastplate signifies the intercessory role of the priest, who stands before God on behalf of the people. In the vision of Revelation, the sardine stone's appearance in the heavenly throne room underscores the divine authority and holiness of God.

In biblical times, precious stones like the sardine were highly valued not only for their beauty but also for their supposed protective and healing properties. The use of such stones in religious contexts highlights the belief in their spiritual significance and their role in conveying the splendor and majesty of the divine.

Historical and Cultural Context:

The sardine stone, or sardius, was well-known in the ancient world, particularly in regions around the Mediterranean. It was often used in jewelry and seals, prized for its durability and striking color. The name "sardine" is believed to be derived from Sardis, an ancient city in Asia Minor, where the stone was commonly found.

In summary, the sardine stone in the Bible serves as a powerful symbol of divine beauty and authority, woven into the fabric of biblical imagery and religious practice. Its presence in Scripture invites reflection on the majesty of God and the sacredness of His covenant with His people.
