Definition and Context:
Recognition by authority in the biblical context refers to the acknowledgment or validation of an individual's role, position, or actions by a figure or institution of established power. This concept is prevalent throughout the Scriptures, where divine or human authorities recognize individuals for their faith, leadership, or service.

Old Testament Examples:
In the Old Testament, recognition by authority often comes from God Himself or through His appointed leaders. For instance, David's anointing by the prophet Samuel is a significant example. Despite being the youngest son of Jesse, David is chosen by God and recognized by Samuel as the future king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:12-13: "So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, 'Rise and anoint him; this is the one.' So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David.").

Another example is Moses, who is recognized by God as the leader to deliver the Israelites from Egypt. In Exodus 3:10, God commissions Moses, saying, "So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt."

New Testament Examples:
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is the ultimate authority who recognizes individuals for their faith and service. One notable instance is His recognition of Peter's confession of faith. In Matthew 16:17-19, Jesus acknowledges Peter's declaration that He is the Messiah, saying, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."

The Apostle Paul also experiences recognition by authority when the leaders of the early church in Jerusalem acknowledge his mission to the Gentiles. In Galatians 2:9, Paul recounts, "James, Cephas, and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me."

Principles and Implications:
Recognition by authority in the Bible often involves a divine element, where God’s will is revealed through human agents. This recognition is not based on human merit but on divine choice and purpose. It underscores the biblical principle that God often chooses the unlikely or the humble to fulfill His purposes, as seen in the selection of David and the apostles.

Furthermore, recognition by authority serves to establish order and legitimacy within the community of believers. It provides a framework for leadership and service, ensuring that those who are called to lead or serve are acknowledged and supported by the community.

Theological Significance:
Theologically, recognition by authority highlights the sovereignty of God in appointing leaders and servants according to His divine plan. It emphasizes the importance of obedience and submission to God’s will, as well as the role of the community in affirming and supporting those whom God has chosen.

In the life of the church, recognition by authority continues to be a vital practice, as seen in the ordination of ministers and the commissioning of missionaries. It reflects the biblical pattern of acknowledging God’s call and equipping individuals for service in His kingdom.
