The term "receivest" is an archaic form of the verb "receive," often found in older translations of the Bible. It denotes the act of accepting, taking, or acquiring something that is given or offered. In the context of Scripture, "receivest" can refer to both physical and spiritual reception, encompassing a wide range of theological and practical implications.

Biblical Usage:

1. Receiving God's Word and Commandments:
The act of receiving God's word is a central theme in the Bible. It implies not only hearing but also accepting and obeying God's commandments. In the Old Testament, the Israelites are often reminded to receive and adhere to the laws given by God through Moses. This reception is not merely passive but involves active engagement and obedience.

2. Receiving Blessings and Promises:
Throughout the Bible, God's people are depicted as recipients of His blessings and promises. For instance, in Genesis, Abraham receives the promise of a great nation and numerous descendants (Genesis 12:2-3). The act of receiving here is tied to faith and trust in God's faithfulness.

3. Receiving Christ and Salvation:
In the New Testament, the concept of receiving takes on a profound spiritual dimension with the coming of Jesus Christ. John 1:12 states, "But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God." Here, receiving Christ is synonymous with believing in Him and accepting His gift of salvation. This reception is transformative, leading to a new identity as children of God.

4. Receiving the Holy Spirit:
The reception of the Holy Spirit is a significant event in the life of a believer. Acts 2:38 records Peter's words, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." The Holy Spirit is received as a gift, empowering believers for holy living and service.

5. Receiving Spiritual Gifts:
The New Testament also speaks of receiving spiritual gifts, which are given by the Holy Spirit for the edification of the church. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 , Paul explains that there are different gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. Believers are encouraged to receive and use these gifts for the common good.

6. Receiving Correction and Discipline:
Proverbs 3:11-12 advises, "My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD, and do not loathe His rebuke; for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, as does a father the son in whom he delights." Receiving correction is portrayed as an act of wisdom and humility, acknowledging God's loving guidance.

7. Receiving Others:
The Bible also emphasizes the importance of receiving others, particularly fellow believers. Romans 15:7 instructs, "Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring glory to God." This reception is an expression of love and unity within the body of Christ.

Theological Implications:

The act of receiving in the biblical sense is deeply intertwined with faith, obedience, and relationship. It is not a passive acceptance but an active engagement with God's will and purposes. Receiving God's word, His Son, and His Spirit involves a commitment to live according to His ways. It reflects a heart open to God's influence and a life transformed by His grace.
