Definition and Meaning:
To reassure means to restore confidence, provide comfort, or remove doubts and fears. In a biblical context, reassurance often comes from God or His messengers, offering peace and certainty to His people in times of uncertainty or fear.

Biblical Instances of Reassurance:

1. God's Reassurance to Individuals:
· Abraham: In Genesis 15:1, God reassures Abram, saying, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." This reassurance comes at a time when Abram is concerned about his lack of an heir, and God promises him descendants as numerous as the stars.
· Moses: In Exodus 3:12, God reassures Moses of His presence, saying, "I will surely be with you," as Moses expresses doubt about his ability to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
· Joshua: After the death of Moses, God reassures Joshua in Joshua 1:9, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

2. Reassurance through Prophets:
· Isaiah: The prophet Isaiah often conveyed God's reassurance to Israel. In Isaiah 41:10, God says, "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."
· Jeremiah: In Jeremiah 29:11, God reassures the exiled Israelites, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

3. Reassurance in the New Testament:
· Jesus' Words: Jesus frequently reassured His disciples. In John 14:27, He says, "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid."
· Paul's Letters: The Apostle Paul often reassured early Christians of God's faithfulness. In Philippians 4:6-7, he writes, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Theological Significance:

Reassurance in the Bible is deeply connected to the character of God as a loving and faithful Father. It reflects His desire for His people to trust in His sovereignty and goodness, even amidst trials and uncertainties. Reassurance is not merely about alleviating fear but is also about anchoring believers in the truth of God's promises and His eternal plan.

Practical Application:

Believers are encouraged to seek reassurance in God's Word and through prayer. The Scriptures provide numerous promises that can be a source of comfort and strength. Christians are also called to reassure one another, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, "Therefore encourage and build one another up, just as you are already doing." This mutual reassurance within the body of Christ fosters unity and spiritual growth.
