In the context of the Bible, the term "prohibited" refers to actions, behaviors, or practices that are expressly forbidden by God. These prohibitions are found throughout both the Old and New Testaments and serve as guidelines for living a life that is pleasing to God. The prohibitions are often tied to the covenant relationship between God and His people, emphasizing holiness, obedience, and the distinction between the sacred and the profane.

Old Testament Prohibitions

1. Idolatry: One of the most emphasized prohibitions in the Old Testament is the worship of idols. The First Commandment explicitly states, "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3). Idolatry is seen as a direct affront to the sovereignty of God and is repeatedly condemned (Deuteronomy 5:7-9).

2. Murder: The Sixth Commandment, "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13), underscores the sanctity of human life. This prohibition is foundational to the moral and legal codes of the Israelite community.

3. Adultery: The Seventh Commandment, "You shall not commit adultery" (Exodus 20:14), highlights the importance of marital fidelity and the sanctity of the marriage covenant.

4. Stealing and False Witness: The Eighth and Ninth Commandments prohibit stealing and bearing false witness (Exodus 20:15-16), promoting honesty and integrity within the community.

5. Dietary Laws: The Mosaic Law includes various dietary restrictions, such as the prohibition against eating pork (Leviticus 11:7-8) and shellfish (Leviticus 11:10-12). These laws served to set Israel apart as a holy nation.

6. Occult Practices: Engaging in witchcraft, divination, or consulting with spirits is strictly forbidden (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Such practices are seen as rebellion against God’s authority.

New Testament Prohibitions

1. Sexual Immorality: The New Testament continues to uphold the prohibition against sexual immorality. Paul writes, "Flee from sexual immorality" (1 Corinthians 6:18), emphasizing purity and self-control.

2. Drunkenness: Believers are warned against drunkenness, which is seen as leading to debauchery (Ephesians 5:18). Instead, Christians are encouraged to be filled with the Spirit.

3. Greed and Covetousness: Jesus warns against greed, stating, "Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed" (Luke 12:15). Paul also lists covetousness among behaviors that are not fitting for saints (Ephesians 5:3).

4. False Teaching: The New Testament warns against false prophets and teachers who distort the truth of the Gospel (2 Peter 2:1). Believers are encouraged to test all teachings against Scripture.

5. Partiality and Favoritism: James admonishes believers not to show favoritism, as it contradicts the law of love (James 2:1-9).

Purpose of Prohibitions

The prohibitions in Scripture serve multiple purposes. They are designed to protect individuals and communities from harm, promote justice and righteousness, and maintain the holiness of God’s people. By adhering to these prohibitions, believers demonstrate their commitment to God’s covenant and reflect His character to the world.
